Vilafonte is a high-profile collaboration between the well-known American winemaking team of Zelma Long and Phil Freese and South Africa's Mike Ratcliffe. On the Paarl side of the Simonsberg mountain, it was founded in 1996 and their first release was the stellar 2003 vintage. Meticulous viticulture and modern cellar practices ensured that Vilafonte was at the cutting-edge of fine wine. The Cabernet Sauvignon based Series C is seriously structured and powerful, as maiden vintages offer perfectly mature, poised wines. Today, Vilafonté is one of the highest scoring Bordeaux-style reds in South Africa. Vilafonte was recently crowned ‘Outstanding Wine Producer and Best Red Wine Producer of the Year' by The International Wine and Spirits Competition.
This lot includes:
2 x 750ml bottles of Vilafonte Series C 2014
No buyers premiums
The Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon (sixty five percent) contributes to the structure, tannin base, and dark fruit; Merlot (nineteen percent) provides complex red fruits and smooth texture. In perfect synergy the Malbec (ten percent) adds to the succulent black fruit flavours and texture. The Cabernet Franc (six percent) provides high notes of cedar and violets, with elegance on the palate.
Cellaring Advice: The series c was matured for twenty-two months in seventy percent new French oak barrels and a further nine months in bottle before release. Cellaring this wine for two years will enhance integration and flavour complexity and will reward the collector. With proper cellaring, Vilafonté series c 2014 will continue to develop its bouquet and palate for at least a decade and will continue to give pleasure for many more years. Decanting before serving is recommended for any wine of advanced complexity.
